The probability of a self-portrait

Metal frame and plaster

2022

A temporary outdoor sculpture inspired by Alebrijes, a traditional Mexican craft. The construction process mimics the cartonería technique, also referred to as paper mache. To create a rougher appearance, concrete mix is used in lieu of engrudo.

Alebrijes are mythical and colorful creatures, first dreamt up by Pedo Linares who was suffering from hallucinations brought on by illness at the time. Though his fever-dreams, visions of monsters came to life. To honor Linares, the creator, I have challenged myself to redefine monsters. Through my exploration, it has become clear to me that the scariest monster of all lives within us. In the blink of an eye, humans have the unique ability to turn from light to dark — and back again.

When swimming with the current, the sea creature swims at great speeds. Should it attempt to swim against the current, however, it risks suffering significant damage. Equipped with a tail akin to a lizard, it can regenerate once cut off. Seemingly out of its own habitat, it bestows the rare gift of growing life from within.
